Friendship is a subject I’ve frequently written about. It comes in many forms and is extremely meaningful and valuable both from the giving and the receiving end. What is meant by that? Receiving friendship as well as providing friendship relieves stress, provides hope, and builds confidence.
As I considered the topic, I began to think about the wonderful friendships with canine companions I’ve had or written about, and how those friendships were expressed.
Here’s an example from Bridges of Resilience: A Teenage Journey of Friendship, Courage, and Discovery about Harry, Nina’s English Setter. The friendship reflects my relationship with Sam, a beloved English Setter of mine.
“Arriving at Elm Street, Nina saw no car in her driveway. Her mom’s car had been in the garage when she left. Mom was sitting on the front porch with Harry, whose ears perked up as Nina rode in. As Nina left her bike in the garage and came around the walkway to the front porch, she stood still and touched her hand to her chest. Harry ran to her and placed his feet on her shoulders. Nina rubbed his ribs and rocked him slightly as the tall, slender dog gazed into her eyes.”
Friendly pet greetings can be the highlight of a challenging day. No difficult questions. No why’s or why not, just love, devotion, and “Gee, I’m so glad you’re home again! Let’s chill!”
Be well, my friends,
Suanne
