Keeping Your Canine Friend’s Paws Safe in Winter

This week, in the single-digit temperatures of our backyard, I’ve been worried about Calli’s (my sweet Yorky-Chon) foot comfort on the snow and ice. I haven’t wanted to take her on our usual walks on the surrounding streets, which have been treated with ice-melt chemicals from the snowplows.

I’ve tried to provide little boots and padded socks for Calli, who adeptly and quickly shakes them off. I ordered some “mush wax” used on sled dog paws as an alternative. We have a grooming spot on a little rug atop the clothes dryer in the laundry room where Calli has daily hair brushing and teeth brushing, so we started there before going outside.

I let Calli sniff the can of wax and snoot at my fingers covered with wax.  She was fine with that.  She quietly complied with my ministrations as I placed the wax on each foot. Finishing the fourth foot, Calli raised her foot and held it up steadily even after I finished.  I finally reminded her she could put her foot down-such patience and trust. Calli and I have an understanding. I will provide her with the safest and most healthful loving environment I can provide, and she will be my gentle, devoted friend. I believe I get the best of the bargain!

I enjoyed being a mom and was pleased to be a healthcare professional for many years. Now, I enjoy taking care of my good little fuzzy friend.  I’m curious about why people own and care for dogs.

***I would love to hear from you about why and how you became a dog owner and what types or breeds of dogs you like. Please let me know through my website email, drsuanne@4stepsconnect.com, and we’ll keep a tally on the website. You will remain anonymous unless you express permission for me to use your name or the name of your dog.
