First Draft of Novel Complete: Self-Doubt in Play

I’ve been telling you about writing my first novel and I’m glad to say that the challenge of the first draft is finished. It’s a coming-of-age story that describes a young teen’s challenge with anxiety and self-doubt amidst family chaos and bullying. It’s a heroine’s journey with a crew of supportive friends, including her loyal companion Harry, her English setter. The book is aimed at young teens, parents of young teens, and teen counselors, covering struggles such as friendships, relationships, lack of confidence, and assertiveness, with a bit of cozy mystery and suspense thrown in.

While having been excited about the story, and completing the first draft, I am having my own self-doubts.  Whoever said that writers write about their own personal challenges certainly hit the proverbial nail on the head.

If you have read any of my blogs or my other books, you probably recognize I’m concerned about negativity, self-destructiveness, alienation, and polarization in today’s environment. I’ve tried to present a story that focuses on a group of young people, including the protagonist as well as the antagonist, and how they eventually cope with these issues in constructive ways.

As I peruse the media, I’m astounded by the violence I see, both self-imposed and inflicted by others. Is there a place for considering and learning more peaceful techniques?  I hope so. As always, thank you for reading, and be well my friends,

Suanne
